The coloured card was an insert placed in a 1996 edition of Sports Illustrated for Kids. It was produced the year before Tiger Woods won his first major: the 1997 US Masters.

Despite the widespread circulation of the card, good specimens are rare, resulting in the high price for this PSA 10 edition.

Chris Ivy, head card trader at Heritage Auction Galleries, told ESPN.com: “There are people that threw the magazine out. Then there are mailmen who folded the magazine and Woods is the center card, so if it was folded at any time the Woods card is ruined."1

The man

Woods has won 14 majors, four behind all-time leader Jack Nicklaus, and has been a dominant force in the game for a number of years.2

In 2009, it was revealed that Woods had engaged in a number of extra-marital relationships. It is unclear how this will impact the value of Woods memorabilia.

Mike Souza sold this card in a March 2001 online auction for $125,000, just weeks before Woods won the US Masters for a second time.
