Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls jersey leads online sports auction
Goldin Auctions' 2016 Winter sports memorabilia sale is now online, headlined by a rare Michael Jordan game-worn jersey.
The red Chicago Bulls road jersey was worn by Jordan during his 1998 farewell season, prior to his second retirement from the game. He certainly said goodbye to the Bulls in style, helping them to the NBA championship for the third year running and winning awards including NBA MVP and NBA scoring champion in the process.
The jersey offered at Goldin Auctions is one of just a handful of photo-matched examples from Jordan's final season in Chicago. He wore it during a rare defeat, going down 112-87 against the LA Lakers at the Great Western Forum on February 1, 1998 (although he did score an impressive 33 points during the game).
Other photo-matched jerseys from the 1998 season have achieved big prices at auction in recent years.
In August 2015, Jordan's jersey from a victory against the Sacramento Kings on February 28, 1998 sold at Goldin Auctions for $102,340, setting a record for a Jordan jersey at auction.
That record was broken in November 2015, when Goldin sold a jersey from Jordan's final regular season game against the Utah Jazz for $173,240.
Bidding on the current jersey has already surpassed $50,000, and is expected to go much higher before then sale ends on January 30.
Further notable highlights from the sale include several Super Bowl championship rings, a highly rare Shoeless Joe Jackson autograph, and a 1952 Topps Mickey mantle rookie card.
