Lot 471: Rugby - Wales. A photograph of Neath Rugby Football Club, 1887, albumen print, showing 15 players in match kit with Maltese Cross motif and manager(?) wearing a top hat, formed in three rows in a small room, 24 x 29.5cm, original card mount with printed red-rule border, signed presentation inscription to lower mount, 'With compliments from John H. Morgan, 1887', mount dust-soiled and slightly cracked to lower and right margins. Recent contemporary newspaper evidence suggests that Neath Rugby Football Club may have been founded in the early 1860s and not as traditionally thought in 1871/72 when the first recorded rugby match in Wales took place between Neath and Swansea. In 1887/88 Neath had their first northern tour with fixtures against Leeds, Wortley, Manningham (Bradford) and Hartlepool Rovers. Though none of the players here have been identified, four of the players in the middle row seated are wearing international caps. (1)
