David Moyes Old Trafford 'Chosen One' banner set to auction
In 2013 David Moyes was announced as the new Manchester United manager, apparently named as heir to the throne by Sir Alex Ferguson himself.
To celebrate the new appointment, United fans commissioned a banner bearing Moyes' face and proclaiming him as "The Chosen One". Eleven months and one disastrous tenure later, Moyes was sacked and the banner consigned to a dusty cupboard.
Now the supporter's group that made the banner have announced plans to sell it in a charity auction.
“The Chosen One banner is still in a storage room at Old Trafford,” Andrew Kilduff from fans’ group Stretford End Flags told The Telegraph. “United have actually told us that he needs collecting as it belongs to us, but we just haven’t got round to it yet.The National Football Museum had been keen to have it, but they haven’t been back in touch, so we will probably look to auction it for charity now."
“I don’t think David Moyes ever liked it and, when fans began to call for it to be removed, we planned to hold a vote the day after the Everton game in April, but David was sacked the same day, so the decision was made for us.
“I had flown to America that day and landed to over sixty voicemails, asking what we would be doing with the banner and where it would going. But it’s still waiting to be collected from Old Trafford, so it is probably time to do something with it.”
Ordinarily the large banner, which hung at Old Trafford's famous Stretford End, would be a sought-after piece of memorabilia for Manchester United fans. But after Moyes' lack of success and ignominious departure from the club, the demand for a piece of club history many would rather forget seems doubtful.
“We have auctioned a couple of banners in the past - we raised £2,000 for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s charity by selling one of his - so it would be nice to do something similar with the Chosen One,” said Kilduff.
