The glove worn by Bill Buckner when he made the most famous mistake in baseball history has sold at Goldin Auctions for more than $100,000.

Buckner wore the glove during Game Six of the 1986 World Series, in which he cost the Boston Red Sox their first World Series title since 1918 with a simple missed catch.

The team had seemed certain to overcome the 'Curse of the Bambino' – a curse which stemmed from their sale of Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1920, which superstitious fans believed had cost them a World Series title ever since.

But Buckner's fielding error went down in history, as the Red Sox collapsed from a winning position against the New York Mets.

Buckner never lived the mistake down, and later said "Some murderers didn't face as much criticism as I did," Buckner would later say. "I couldn't believe it. It's like I did nothing in my career except commit that error."

The infamous piece of sporting history sold for $104,400.

Further baseball highlights from the online sale included a 1956 St. Louis Cardinals home jersey worn and signed by Stan 'The Man' Musial, which sold for $72,000; a game-used Babe Ruth Hillerich & Bradsby bat, circa 1921-31, which sold for $31,850; and an iconic 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle rookie card, graded SGC 84 NM 7, which sold for $82,075.

For basketball fans, the top lots were led by a Michael Jordan game-worn Chicago Bulls black road jersey, signed and photo-matched to the 1997-98 NBA season.

It was Jordan's final season with the Bulls, and he signed off in style, leading the team to its sixth championship in eight years. Initially valued at $25,000+, the jersey eventually sold for $88,200.

Further notable items included Jordan's game-worn Nike sneakers from his 1984-85 rookie season, which sold for $40,425, and a Los Angeles Lakers uniform worn by Kobe Bryant during his 2015-16 farewell season, including the game at which he announced his retirement, which fetched $39,600.

The eclectic auction also featured a pair of boxing gloves worn by Muhammad Ali in 1980 in a bout against Larry Holmes, which fetched $47,775; and a 1996 Jerry Rice game worn San Francisco 49ers divisional playoff home jersey, which sold for $19,200.
