$411,500 for Sir Roger Bannister's 'four minute mile' shoes
A pair of running shoes that were worn by the legendary Sir Roger Bannister when he ran the 'four minute mile' in 1954 have sold for $411,500 at auction with Christies.
The shoes sold for 5 times their auction estimate to an anonymous phone bidder at Christies in Kensington, where they had originally been expected to fetch up to $71,000.
Sir Roger was the first man to ever run a mile in under 4 minutes completing the race in 3 min 59.4-a record that would last just 46 days before being beaten.
Sir Roger is now 86 and is donating part of the proceeds from the sale to the Autonomic Charitable Trust, which encourages the area of neurological research to which he devoted most of his professional life.
