Smithsonian Reboot the Suit campaign reaches $700,000
The Smithsonian's first ever crowdfunding campaign 'Reboot the Suit' that was launched to help raise money to restore Neil Armstrong's Apollo 11 suit has raised over $700,000.
The month long campaign began on the 20th of July and attracted over 9,000 donors helping it to realise its $500,000 goal in just 5 days. The Smithsonian then decided to tack on an additional $200,000 to reboot the Mercury spacesuit worn by Alan Shepard-a goal which was realized 17 hours before the campaign ended.
The scheme will help pay for a climate-controlled display case and the digitization of the suit using detailed 3D scanning. The Smithsonian hope to have the suit ready for the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing in 2019.
