Lot 519: Rare color satin-finish 9.25 x 7.25 photo of a NASA Space Shuttle launch, signed and inscribed in black felt tip to radio host Smilin' Jack Donovan, "To 'Smilin Jack'—Best wishes from STS 51-L! El Onizuka," "S. Christa McAuliffe," "Dick Scobee," "Ronald E. McNair," "Mike Smith," "Judy Resnik," and "Greg Jarvis." Double-matted and framed to an overall size of 15.5 x 13.5. Significant brushing to portions of McAuliffe's last name, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from the recipient, in part: "This photo was signed by the crew at the Kennedy Space Center while they were in quarantine waiting to launch. It was discovered in the crew quarters following the explosion and sent to me by a friend who was a member of NASA security and had requested the photo for me. It is inscribed to 'Smilin Jack,' which was my on-air radio name at the time the disaster occurred." A rare fully signed photo made truly remarkable by its proximity to the Challenger tragedy.
