Lot 5045: Signed book: Good News for Modern Man. Second edition. NY: American Bible Society, 1966. Softcover, 4 x 7, 599 pages. Signed and inscribed on the title page in blue ink, "On permanent loan to Guenter Wendt, In the faith, Buzz Aldrin, Apollo 11." A bookplate affixed inside the front cover reads: "This book presented to Webster Presbyterian Church in memory of Marion Moon Aldrin by Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr." Autographic condition: a few spots of soiling to the inscription, and a small portion of the page's left edge detached from the spine. Book condition: VG-/None. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by Wendt, in part: "This modern version of the New Testament…was presented to me by NASA astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Apollo 11 Lunar Module Pilot, in the White Room atop Kennedy Space Center's Pad 39A on July 16, 1969, prior to Apollo 11's launch to the moon…It was one of 130 copies that Buzz had given to the Webster Presbyterian Church in memory of his mother." When on the moon, Aldrin secretly observed communion using a communion wafer and a small vial of communion wine consecrated for him by his pastor at Webster Presbyterian Church. Celebrated shortly after landing on the lunar surface, these communion elements became the first food and liquid consumed on the moon. A thoughtful piece presented as Aldrin prepared to lift off for his historic mission.
