King of Spain (1857–1885) who reigned from 1874 to 1885, after a coup d'etat restored the monarchy and ended the ephemeral First Spanish Republic; his mother, Isabella II, had been deposed in the Glorious Revolution of 1868. Manuscript DS in French, signed “Alfonso,” one page, 8.5 x 11, June 7, 1883. Document conferring an award of the Royal Order of Charles III upon his "cousin," Prince Nicolas of Montenegro. In fine condition. The Royal and Distinguished Spanish Order of Charles III was established in 1771, and is the most distinguished civil award that can be granted in Spain, despite its categorization as a military order.
