  • A letter signed by J.R.R Tolkien, acclaimd author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings

J.R.R Tolkien (1892 - 1973) was an English author responsible for the best-selling books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

His creation of the fantasy world of Middle Earth in the late 1930s made him one of the biggest-selling and most popular writers of the 20th century.

To date his books have sold more than 250 million copies around the world, and spawned an empire of blockbuster films, TV shows, video games and merchandise.

This three-page letter is typed on Tolkien's personal stationary, headed “Professor J.R.R. Tolkien CBE” and addressed from Merton College, Oxford University.

The letter is dated September 26, 1972, less than a year before Tolkien passed away in September 1973 at the age of 81.

The letter concerns a bust of Tolkien sculpted by his daughter-in-law Faith, and presented to him in 1959 by the university as a retirement gift.

He later had it cast in bronze, and gifted it back to the English faculty in 1966, where it remains on display to this day.

In this typed letter, he suggests that the faculty could raise funds by selling bronze copies of the bust:

“I thought it might be possible to have some other casts made to order while the tide of Tolkien adulation was still high...”

He also suggests selling signed photographs of the bust to library visitors, which he could sign to increase the value.

“I would be willing to sign a limited number of these with my ordinary signature, for which you could charge more.”

The three pages are double-mounted for display, and remain in fine condition with just some slight foxing and horizontal folding.

Tolkien has signed the letter 'Ronald Tolkien' - a personal signature he reserved for letters to his closest friends and colleagues.

The majority of his letters, particularly to fans, were signed with the much more common "J.R.R Tolkien" version of his signature.

A scare and highly desirable signed letter.
