Edward IV First Reign gold coin (1464-1470)

Ryall Light coinage, London mint. Very fine.

A superb medieval gold coin with all details clear due to its strong strike. Edward introduced a new gold coin in 1465, slightly heavier than the noble and this was called the 'Ryal' or less commonly the 'Rose Noble' (because of the rose in the middle of the reverse).

It tariffed at 10 shillings as opposed to the former coin at 8s 4d. Later he reduced the weight slightly such as in this issue.

Essentially, Yorkist Edward was trying to increase the supply of bullion to the mint in the chaos of the 'Wars of the Roses' that had such a detrimental effect on the state and supply of current coin.
