  • A handsome 1864 handwritten and signed envelope from Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) is regarded as the greatest English writer of his age.

His broad body of work includes some of the most celebrated novels ever written - including Oliver Twist, Great Expectations and A Christmas Carol.

3 x 6.5 inches.

Addressed in Dickens' hand to actor and dramatist Benjamin Webster (1797-1882), who adapted Dickens' 1844 Christmas book 'The Chimes' for a theatre production.

Webster was manager of London's New Adelphi Theatre and Theatre Royal Haymarket.

Dickens addresses the letter to Webster at the New Adelphi.

Dickens has also signed the letter handsomely in the bottom left.

The envelope bears a Gravesend postmark, indicating Dickens likely wrote it from his nearby Gads Hill home.

The postmark is dated December 23, 1864 - a nice Christmassy addition to the piece.

In excellent condition for its age. Featuring the hand of arguably England's finest novelist.

Accompanied by a vintage photograph of Dickens.

Provenance: Ex-Stanley Gibbons.
