Lot 49: Andy Warhol Poster for His ''Exploding Plastic Inevitable'' Show in 1966 in Provincetown, Massachusetts - Only Second Poster to Appear at Auction

From 1966 to 1967, Andy Warhol hosted a series of parties that defied easy description; part concert, part performance art, part movie screening, these ''Exploding Plastic Inevitable'' shows were wholly Andy Warhol. Event poster is for the series of shows from 31 August to 4 September in Provincetown, Massachusetts, entitled ''It's Andy Warhol's Explosion! / Exploding Plastic Inevitable'', teased as ''Where Entertainments Going''. The shows often featured performances by Nico, as this one does, as well as avant garde cinema by Jonas Mekas, dancing by the Factory coterie and sophisticated strobe lighting. Printing information on bottom of poster reads ''Metropolitan Show Print - 97 West Dedham St., Boston, Mass.'' Printed on heavy card stock, poster measures 14'' x 21.75''. Creasing and discoloration from moisture exposure, overall in good condition. Only the second known example of this poster at auction, with the other selling for $8,400.
