Bonhams' movie poster sale sets record in Hollywood
Bonhams and Turner Classic Movies have hosted a record-breaking auction of movie posters in Los Angeles.
The July 20 sale, entitled 'Picture Perfect: The Art of Movie Posters', featured rare posters and original artwork spanning decades of Hollywood history.
Topping the sale was a one-sheet poster for the classic 1935 musical Top Hat, starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, which realized a world record price of $37,5000.
Further notable sales included an Italian poster for the 1947 Rita Hayworth thriller Lady from Shanghai which sold for $25,000, a preliminary concept painting for Star Wars by poster artist Dan Goozee which sold for $16,250, and an Italian poster for La Dolce Vita (1960) which fetched $17,500.
Bonhams and TCM have also announced the first details of their forthcoming 'Treasures from the Dream Factory' auction, set to take place in New York on November 23.
Amongst the lots will be some of the most iconic costumes and props in cinema history. Leading the line-up is a dress worn by Judy Garland as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, estimated at up to $1.2 million, followed by Steve McQueen's racing suit from Le Mans, consigned from the estate of Natalie Wood, estimated at $200,000-$300,000.
The sale will also include a 'Rosebud' sled given to screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz following filming on Citizen Kane, valued at $100,000-$200,000, and one of the original Golden Tickets from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory priced at $10,000-$15,000.
