NASA & Royal Mail team up to calculate cost of posting to Mars
When a five year old boy asked The Royal Mail how much it would cost to send a letter to Mars the British postal service enlisted the help of NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida to help find the answer. Their response? It would take 18,416 First Class stamps at a total cost of £11,602.25.
NASA calculated the figure by using the Curiosity mission as an example-by comparing the weight of the ship and cost of the mission by that of a standard letter.
Five year old Oliver Giddings of Lancashire's responded to the findings: 'Wow! That's a lot of money! It’s very expensive to send a letter to Mars. You would need so many stamps!”
