Lot 76: LS signed "W. McKinley, Jr.," one page, 5.5 x 8.75, State of Ohio Executive Chamber letterhead, September 16, 1892. Letter to Senator John Sherman. In full: "I hope you can make it convenient to dine with me at the Chittenden today at 1 p.m. There will be several friends, and I would like Mr. Babcock to come with you." In fine condition, with intersecting folds, a small stain and paper loss to the left edge, and show-through at the top from docketing to reverse. Earlier in the summer McKinley had lost the Republican presidential nomination to Benjamin Harrison but would receive the nomination four years later. Sherman had already run for the Republican nomination three times, coming closest to winning in 1888. Once McKinley was finally successful in securing the presidency, he awarded his friend Sherman with the position of secretary of state.
