Lot 6: James Madison
DS as president, one page, 11.5 x 14.5, December 5, 1809. A patent issued to Atkinson Farra, who “hath alleged that he has invented a new and useful improvement being a double-bored pendulum Pump.” Crisply signed at the conclusion by President Madison and countersigned by Secretary of State Robert Smith and Attorney General Cesar A. Rodney. The white paper seal and portions of the original ribbon remain affixed to the left side. A manuscript page describing the invention is also included. In very good condition, with moderate overall soiling, missing upper right corner tip, and several tape ghosts to edges.
