Lot 466: Hume Joseph: (1777-1855) Scottish Politician. An Interesting A.L.S., Joseph Hume, Two Pages, 8Vo, Bryanston Square, 18Th March 1844, To Henry Goulburn. Hume Informs His Correspondent That He Has Received A Letter From Liverpool And Continues To Quote An Extract From It, 'I Have A Very Important Evidence In A Tobacco Manufacturer Who Uses A Ton Of Smuggled Tobacco Every Month & He Is Otherwise Conversant With The Smuggling Trade. He Will Give Evidence Willingly Provided That He Is Guaranteed From Prosecution….& Provided His Name Does Not Appear When The Evidence Is Printed' Further Remarking 'I Consider It Very Important To The Inquiry We Are About To Commence To Obtain Such Evidence….My Informer Is A Most Reputable Man And I Therefore Consider The Opportunity A Favourable One To Be Embraced' With Blank Integral Leaf.
