Lot 347: Traveling while Black in 1958
Lot 347: Author: N/A; Title: Morris' Historic Travel Guide, 1958-1959 Edition; Place Published: San Francisco; Publisher: Harold Morris/United Publishers; Date Published: [1958]; Description: 157, [3] pp. Illustrated from photographs, etc. 25.5x10 cm (10x4"), pictorial wrappers.Rare travel guide to the whole United States, geared towards African Americans, pointing towards those places that will welcome their business, or at least not be openly hostile in an America struggling with its racism. As the publisher writes in his preface, "We have contacted thousands of business people, owners of hotels and motels and restaurants through personal contact and many thousands of letters in regard to them accepting Negroes... You may accept our listings of white motals and hotels as 'authentic' as we have signed cards of owners and managers stating they will accept Negroes." Many of the destinations are geared toward African American history and culture, such as the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, but of primary interest are the listings of lodgings that will accept black customers. Publishd in the Fillmore District of San Francisco. No copies are listed in OCLC/WorldCat. Condition: Some minor dampstaining and wear; very good overall.
