Lot 241: Revolutionary War–dated manuscript DS, one page, 12 x 9, March 27, 1782. As governor of Massachusetts, Hancock appoints Joseph Howe "to be an Ensign in the seventh Massachusetts Regiment of Foot, one of the Battalions raised by this Commonwealth to serve in the Continental Army, whereof John Brooks Esqr. is Lieutenant Colonel Commandant." Beautifully signed at the conclusion in bold ink by Governor Hancock and countersigned by John Avery as secretary. Matted and framed with a portrait and plaque. Professionally, archivally restored to fine condition.
The 7th Massachusetts Regiment most notably saw action at the Battles of Saratoga, the Cherry Valley massacre, and the Sullivan Expedition. The commander, John Brooks, later served as governor of Massachusetts. A fabulous example in signature quality and content.
