Lot 1180: Temple Richard: (1675-1749) 1St Viscount Cobham. British Soldier And Politician Who Fought Under John Churchill, 1St Duke Of Marlborough, During The War Of The Spanish Succession. Cobham States That He Has Received Instructions 'To Dispatch An Officer Of Distinction To The King Of Portugal To Give Him Assurances In Their Name Of The Continuance Of His Majesty'S Friendship & Their Great Regard For Him' And Adds That He Has Sent Lord Hinchinbrook For The Purpose, Asking His Correspondent To Introduce Him To The Secretary Of State At Lisbon And Procure An Audience With The King, 'As It Will More Effectually Answer The End Of The Message, Which, As You Know, Is Design'D To Give A Jealousy To The Spaniards That There Are Projects On Foot In Concert With The Portugeeze To Distress Them Yet Farther' . Some Slight Age Wear And Traces Of Former Mounting To The Left And Right Edges Of The Recto And Verso, Only Very Slightly Affecting The Text But Not The Signature, About Vg. Henry Worsley (1672-1740) British Ambassador To Portugal 1714-22. During The War Of The Quadruple Alliance, At The Time Of The Present Letter, Temple Led A Force Of 4,000 Troops On A Raid On The Spanish Coastline Which Captured Vigo And Occupied It For Ten Days Before Withdrawing.
