Lot 1174: Palmerston Viscount: (1784-1865) British Prime Minister 1855-58, 1859-65. A.L.S., Palmerston, Three Pages, 4To, Stanhope Street, 12Th April 1837, To Joseph Brotherton. Palmerston Apologises To His Correspondent For Not Having Responded Sooner 'Upon The Subject Of The Application Which You Gave To Me From Mr. Hay, Who Is Desirous Of Obtaining An Appointment As Consul' And Continuing To Assure Brotherton That He Shall Bear Hay In Mind 'And The Strong Recommendations Of Which His Application Has Been Accompanied'. Palmerston Further Writes 'With Regards However To The Two Consulships Which Mr Hay Mentions The One, Malaga, Is Not Vacant, And The Other Philadelphia I Shall Be Obliged To Fill Up By A Different Arrangement. In Fact Vacancies Seldom Happen In Consular Appointments Which Are Held For Life, And I Have As You May Well Suppose A Very Large List Of Candidates Many Of Whose Applications Are Of Long Standing And Several Of Whom Have Strong Personal Claims Forwarded Upon Former Services' And Concludes 'I Wish I Could Give Mr. Hay A More Encouraging Answer, But Difficulties Are Not Diminished By Concealing Them, & It Is Best To State Things As They Really Are'. Two Small Areas Of Paper Loss To The Upper And Lower Left Corners Of The Final Page, Evidently Caused By Previous Mounting, Only Very Slightly Affecting One Letter Of Text, Otherwise Vg. Joseph Brotherton (1783-1857) British Politician And A Pioneering Vegetarian Whose Wife, Martha, Wrote The First Vegetarian Cookbook, Vegetable Cookery In 1812.
