Lot 116: TLS signed "Wm. H. Taft," one page, 7.75 x 10.5, Office of the Civil Governor of the Philippine Islands letterhead, January 27, 1903. Letter to Fred J. Schlotfeldt, in full: "I beg to thank you for your kind letter of the 17th of January and to say that I am still with you, and expect to be indefinitely. It is, as you say, however, very gratifying to feel that the people of the Islands desire my retention and that, to that extent at least, I have won their confidence." In fine condition, with erased pencil notations to upper left corner. Taft served as the first civilian Governor-General of the Philippines from 1901 to 1904, helping organize a government in the recently annexed islands.
