Lenin death mask

Lenin death mask is a cast made of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin’s face following his death after following a series of strokes in January 1924, aged 53.

Only 14 of the masks are known to have been made.

Sergey Merkurov

Well-known sculptor, Sergey Merkurov, produced 14 death masks of Lenin.

Merkurov studied under Auguste Rodin in Paris and was one of Russia’s most famous artists.

Merkurov was also responsible for three of the biggest monuments of Joseph Stalin and famous statue of Lenin that stood in Lenin Square was also the work of Merkurov.


The majority of Merkurov’s death masks are kept in museums in the former Soviet Union and one is in the mausoleum of Lenin within the grounds of the Kremlin in Moscow.

Another of the masks is at the St. Petersburg State Museum of Political History and is said to be the museum’s most viewed exhibit.
