Fidel Castro (born on 13 August 1926 – but listed as 1927 by some scholars - in Oriente Province, Cuba) was leader of Cuba from 1959 until he stepped down in 2008.

After an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1953, he later succeeded in 1959 after joining forces with revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara. Their revolution is regarded as one of the great Marxist victories of the modern era.
