A Fidel Castro & Che Guevara signed pre-revolution Cuban flag is a highly rare and important piece of historic Cuban political memorabilia.

Background and history

Fidel Castro and Che Guevara were two of the most influential figures of the Cuban Revolution which sought to overthrow the President and dictator Fulgencio Batista.

Throughout the 1950s Castro and his rebels engaged the government in guerrilla warfare, starting with an attack on the Moncada Barracks in 1953. Although captured and sentenced to 15 years in jail, Castro and his brother Raúl were released after just two years and fled to Mexico.

Here they met Che Guevara, and together planned the revolution which succeeded in forcing Batista from power in January 1959.

Castro remained at the head of Cuba’s controversial Communist government until passing power to his brother in 2008.

Che Guevara was killed in October 1967 whilst fighting alongside revolutionaries in Bolivia. Today he is viewed as one of the most important political revolutionary figures of the 20th century and the iconic depiction of his face (created in 1968 by Irish artist Jim Fitzpatrick) has become one of the most reproduced images ever created, used by generations as a symbol of youthful rebellion.

Item description

The Cuban flag measures 23" x 12½", and is framed to an overall size of 27¾" x 17½". It features handwritten inscriptions and signatures from Fidel Castro and Che Guevara.

The upper white stripe of the flag features a handwritten inscription from Castro in Spanish which reads: "We will not let anybody impede the triumph that is coming". Castro's signature appears beneath the inscription.

In the lower white stripe features a Spanish inscription from Che Guevara which reads "We will only stop this fight when our flag waves free and sovereign". The signature 'Che' appears below.

Rarity

No items featuring the signatures of both Fidel Castro and Che Guevara have appeared for sale on the public market during the last 35 years, making the flag highly rare in itself.

This rarity, combined with the pre-revolutionary circumstances in which it was signed and the inscriptions themselves, make this flag the finest piece of Cuban memorabilia in existence and one that can be regarded as ‘museum’ quality’.

Current ownership

The flag is available to purchase from the company Paul Fraser Collectibles, who specialise in rare memorabilia and unique pieces of history.

It is currently priced at £100,000.
