5 most expensive items of Fidel Castro memorabilia

1) Cheque written to Che Guevara - £8,395

A one of a kind cheque from Fidel Castro to Che Guevara for $10,534,567.52 from February 1961 was sold at auction for £8,395.

It is thought to be the only cheque written by Castro in existence.

2) Golden gun - $10,350

Fidel Castro became friends with engraver John Ek during the 1950s. Ek offered to gold-plate Castro’s 1958 .34 calibre Colt handgun.

The following Bay of Pigs invasion and Missle Crisis meant that Ek was never able to return the gun.

It was sold by Bonhams in 2005 for $10,350.

3) Materials relating to Castro’s interview with Playboy magazine - $8,963

In December 2003, an extensive archive of materials relating to Castro’s interview with Lee Lockwood published in Playboy in January 1967 was sold by Christie’s in New York for $8,963.

The lot included typescripts for the introduction to the interview, typed manuscripts of the interview, a typed letter to Hugh Hefner and three black and white photos of Castro by Sven Simon, amongst other items.

4) Signed photo - £4,000

A signed photograph of Castro with fellow revolutionary, Camilo Cienfuegos entering Havana on January 8 1959 was sold by Dominic Winter Book Auctions in 2010 for £4000.

Castro’s is one of the top 40 most sought after autographs according to the PFC40 Autograph Index and his signed photos have increased in value by 807.7% in the last 10 years.

5) Account of the final days of the Cuban Revolution - $2,390

A photograph album titled "Academia De Ciencias De Cuba - Fotografias" which featured a typed manuscript with tipped in photographs, including an inscribed photograph of Castro was sold by Heritage Auction Galleries in October 2006 for $2,390.

The document was put together by Celia Sanchez Manduley, secretary, friend and rumoured lover to Castro.
