These early mass-produced enamel badges are rooted in the technologies of the industrial revolution as furnaces fused glass particles onto a metal base at extreme heat resulting in hard vitreous enamel badges (although London had a strong manufacturing base for badges, it was Birmingham’s ‘Jewellery Quarter’ that led the way – many of the jewellers diversified and enamel badge production became a lucrative sideline).
