eBay ban collector for selling golly badge
Collector Phil Nifield has been banned from eBay for trying to sell a rare golly badge that was originally produced by Robertson's Jams-as eBay attempt to completely ban the figure from their site.
After listing the badge on eBay Nifield recieved a warning message from the US based auction site informing him that his ilisting was “hateful and discriminatory” and that he had used “racially offensive terms” in the description.
The badge dates from the 1960s when the use of Golly's was becoming frowned upon for being a racist caricature of black people. The company defended its use of the controversial figure by claiming it was a 'fictional nurseryland character' and only ceased using it to advertise products in 1998.
Unknown to Nifield, who has sold Golly figures online before, eBay has now completely banned the selling of anything 'golly' related after feedback from their community.
