Noboyoshi Araki’s From Close to Range (1991) has achieved $191,000 against a $120,000 estimate at Phillips New York – equating to an increase of 59.1%.
The work consists of two prints displaying wilted and blooming flowers opposite one another, and was conceived by the artist as a response to the death of his wife Yoko.
It was issued in an edition of 15.
Araki is regarded as one of Japan’s most exciting and controversial artists. His work typically straddles the line between erotic and pornographic.
