Lot 627: Darwin (Charles, 1809-1882). Portrait by Maull & Polyblank, circa 1855, mounted albumen print, three-quarter length and in three-quarter profile, heavy spotting to left light blank area of image, 17 x 14.5cm, framed and glazed, remains of studio label pasted to verso. Notable as the first popular image of Darwin, but one which Darwin disliked intensely, noting once in an 1860 letter to Hooker that "it makes me look atrociously wicked". (1)
