Description: Two gelatin silver print photographs, 11.5x16.5 cm (4½x6½") and 18.5x23 cm (7¼x9"), each on old stiff card backing. Individually matted, overall 41x51 cm (16x20"). Signed by the photographer at the lower right. Both San Francisco views, the smaller image is a lumberyard at Beach and Mason Streets and the larger is an architectural detail of a staircase on the exterior of one of the buildings at the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island. William Abbenseth (1898-1972) was an American photographer best known for his black & white photographs of San Francisco architecture such as those offered here. Abbenseth became involved in the Federal Art Project in the mid-1930s primarily photographing San Francisco homes and other buildings. His photographs are held in many institutional collections, including the SFMOMA and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Condition: Some light wear and soiling to old mounts and matting, images near fine with only light surface wear.
