Description: Four gelatin silver print photographs, 24x19 cm (9½x7½"), 24x18 cm (9½x7¼"), 24x19 cm (9½x7½"), and 23x16 cm (9x6¼"), each on a larger old stiff card backing. Signed by the photographer at the lower right. All San Francisco views, the first identified as Redwood Empire Building, the second as 1038 Scott St., the third a detail of the Redwood Empire Building, the last as 228 Filbert Street, Telegraph Hill. William Abbenseth (1898-1972) was an American photographer best known for his black & white photographs of San Francisco architecture such as those offered here. Abbenseth became involved in the Federal Art Project in the mid-1930s primarily photographing San Francisco homes and other buildings. His photographs are held in many institutional collections, including the SFMOMA and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Condition: Some wear and soiling to old mounts, images near fine with only light surface wear.
