Lot 215: Author: Nelson, E.N.; Title: Six original gelatin silver photographs of construction of the Gatun Locks at the Panama Canal; Place Published: Colon, Panama; Publisher: N/A; Date Published: 1909-1910; Description: Images approx. 12x17.5 cm (4¾x7"), on original thick card stock mounts; captioned and with photographer's imprint in the negatives.Scarce photographic records of the construction of the three-tier double set of locks at Gatun Lake which lower ships to the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal (or raises them up to the lake level). The Gatun locks, coupled with those at Miraflores and Pedro Miguel on the Pacific side, were one of the greatest engineering works ever to be undertaken when they opened in 1914. No other concrete construction of comparable size was undertaken until the Hoover Dam, in the 1930s. Included are views of carpenters constructing forms for the mouth of the locks; the finished forms; the electric power house; the spillway; the concrete mixer building; and the massive locks themselves. Condition: Some minor edge wear to mounts; very good or better.
