Andy Warhol and Group is a 3-panel photograph by celebrated photographer Richard Avedon. It features the artist Andy Warhol along with members of his infamous ‘Factory’.
About the photograph
The image was taken in 1969, and portrays the artist with a number of actors, directors and poets who regularly appeared in Warhol’s films. They include:

- Joe Dallesandro
- Candy Darling
- Eric Emerson
- Jay Johnson
- Tom Hempertz
- Gerard Malanga
- Viva
- Taylor Mead
- Brigid Polk
The image was originally designed as a three-panel triptych, and later versions and prints of the image have been displayed with the panels in different orders.
Notable sales
In November 2010 at a Christie’s sale of Avedon’s work in Paris, the original series of three unique silver prints mounted on masonite were sold for €301,000 ($412,301). The work was the original prototype of the image ‘Andy Warhol and members of The Factory, New York, October 9, 1969’, and collectively became one of the most expensive photographs ever sold at auction.
In 2007 at another Christie’s auction in New York, a limited-edition silver gelatine print of the final image created in 1975 sold for $73,000.
