Prototype Les Paul isn't messiah, is a very naughty boy
The prototype "Black Beauty" Les Paul that's heading to auction next week has been causing some heated debate in the guitar community- it turns out that it might not be the 'holy grail' that the auction and Guitar Player magazine hve made it out to be.
Through my own research the only direct contribution that the prototype Les Paul might have had is the fact it was among the first ones to be painted in black as opposed to the then usual gold because Les Paul wanted it to look 'more like a tuxedo.'
There's an excellent article over on Washington Post explaining the ins and outs of this particular guitar and why it is (or isn't) so special, with an also very worthwhile follow up on Boing Boing. How much will the guitar sell for at auction? It'll be fascinating to see.
