Les Paul's Black Beauty sells for $335,500
The value of Les Paul's custom guitar, Black Beauty varies depending on who you ask. A washington post article the other day asked if it could be worth $ 2 million, where as Joe Bonamassa said he wouldn't pay $10,000 for it. Jim Irsay, owner of the Indianapolis Colts just dropped $335,500 for it, then stating he would have gone as high as $625,000.
Most of the press surrounding the guitar in the last week or two has called into question whether it was really as important and influential as the auction house Gurnseys and a recent issue of Guitar Player magazine had lead people to believe, both calling it "The Holy Grail".
Still, any guitar owned, played and tinkered with by Les Paul himself was always going to carry a lot of weight behind it. Either way, the $335,500 is a lot of money so no doubt Les Paul's long time luthier (the consigner) will be pleased!
