Currently on Kickstarter is Hand Chord, basically a capo for your fingers that eliminates the need for you to finger chords while playing the guitar, just leaving you to focus on the strumming/ picking patterns. Designed to attract would be learners that don't want to put up with the pain that comes when you first start learning, I'd argue it delays the pain rather than solving it.

The longer you have your fingers touching the strings, the more of an immunity you'll build to the pain, largely through the callouses on the ends of your ends of your finger tips. With Hand Chord it's potentially more likely to put people off wanting to experiement with chords and placements as they'll most likely want to stick with the product for as long as they can.

That said, if it introduces more people to playing then maybe it's not a bad thing at all. backers that pledge more than $35 on Kickstarter will get an early version of the product- after that who knows?
