10) Sumo Wrestler sketch - $1,912
Circa 1982-84 Kurt Cobain hand drawn and signed high school sumo wrestler sketch. The wrestler stands over two smashed guitars, and the caption reads: ‘Trash all the others! Buy a Fender’. A rare example of his artwork before he was famous, it sold for $1,912 at Heritage Auctions in 2008.
9) Heart Shaped Box signed display - $6,000
Nirvana signed display piece record album of Heart Shaped Box, signed by Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic with their first names. Sold for $6,000 at Bonhams in 2006.
8) Smells Like Teen Spirit MTV Award - $7,500
Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit MTV Music Award from 1992. The award has the misspelling ‘Smells Like Team Spirit’. Sold for $7,500 at Julien’s Auctions in 2004.
7) Kurt Cobain used microphone - $8,125
A Super-Pro SM58 microphone used by Kurt Cobain during Nirvana’s last recording session in January 1994 at Robert Lang Studios, Seattle. Sold for $8,125 at Christie’s in 2009.
6) Autographed leather jacket - $12,500
A leather jacket, singed on the back with personalised messages from members of Nirvana and Soundgarden. Kurt wrote: ‘Peace, Pot, Micro dot, Kurdt’. Dave Grohl wrote: ‘Right on Sister, Dave’, and Krist Novoselic wrote his first name. Sold for $12,500 at Christie’s in 2009.
5) Angry letter to MTV - $12,800
An angry handwritten letter to MTV, undated. The letter reads:
"Dear Empty TV/ the entity of all Corporate / GODS / We will survive without you/ easily - - the / oldschool is going / DOWN FAST/ my lifes Dedication/ is Now to Do Nothing/ But SLAG something / Kurdt Kobaineee professional Rock musician."
Sold for $12,800 at Julien’s in 2010.
4) Fax from Kurt Cobain to Courtney Love - $19,120
A letter from Kurt Cobain to Courtney Love, written and faxed during their tour of England in 1991. He describes hallucinating while tripping on acid, and mentions Nirvana’s appearance on Top of the Pops. The original letter sold for $19,120 at Christie’s in 2004.
3) Kurt Cobain’s wristwatch - $29,000
The only watch that Cobain wore, it can be seen on his wrist in numerous music videos and photographs. Apparently it stopped ticking a week after Cobain died. The watch was given as a memento to friend Babes in Toyland singer Kat Bjelland, and was sold for $29,000 at Heritage Auctions in 2008.
2) Kurt Cobain smashed Fender Mustang - $100,000
The Fender Mustand that Kurt Cobain smashed during their first U.S. Tour was sold by punk guitarist Sluggo, with whom he had traded it, for $100,000 in a private sale in 2008. It was inscribed: ‘If it’s illegal to rock and roll, throw my ass in jail’.
1) Kurt Cobain Mosrite Gospel Mark IV guitar - $131,450
Cobain purchased his Mosrite Gospel in San Francisco. It is one of just two known 1960s Mark IV Gospels. It sold at auction in 1994 for $75,000, again in Texas in 2004 for $117,500, and sold for $131,450 at Heritage Auctions in 2006.
