The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper Souvenir Poster
‘The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper Souvenir Poster’ is a highly dating from 1967. Autographed by all four members of the Beatles, it sold at auction for $52,500 in June 2009.
The Beatles were an English rock and pop band active between 1960 and 1970. Formed in Liverpool, UK, from 1962 the band consisted of its most famous members: Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
The Beatles are regularly cited as the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed popular music act of all time. Their popularity remained constant throughout and beyond their career, but was particularly acute during the early 1960s, a phenomenon dubbed ‘Beatlemania’.
The poster, dating from 1967, was produced by the Beatles Fan Club of Great Britain, to mark the release of the band’s eighth studio album ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’.
The linen-backed poster, measuring 30 by 20 inches, was signed by all four members of The Beatles in blue ink.
The poster shows John, Paul, George and Ringo dressed in their respective Sgt. Pepper uniforms, as worn on the cover sleeve of the album. The picture on the poster was taken by Michael Cooper and originally included inside the ‘gatefold’ sleeve of the album.
Items relating to the Beatles are by far the most sought after music memorabilia. Due to the popularity of the band and the deaths of John Lennon and George Harrison, items signed by all four members are highly coveted.
In addition, this poster is a rare print issued by the official Beatles Fan Club of Great Britain, hailing from what is often regarded as the Beatles’ most iconic and musically creative period.
On 23rd June 2009, the poster was auctioned in the “Pop Culture” sale of music memorabilia by Christie’s, New York. It was purchased for $52,500, significantly higher than the $30-40,000 estimate.
