Lot 4030: John Lennon and Yoko Ono Original 1972 Candid Polaroid
17th August 2017
One-of-a-kind vintage original color glossy 3.25 x 4.25 candid Polaroid photo of John and Yoko kissing, taken for the ‘Foto Funnies’ section of the March 1972 issue of National Lampoon. The memorable image shows the two of them wearing hardhats and Yoko’s eyes are wide open. The photo was gifted by Lennon to National Lampoon art director (and Lennon’s personal designer) Michael Gross. Gross was also well known as the producer of the first Ghostbusters films and the creator of its iconic 'No Ghosts Here' logo. In very good to fine condition, with tape to front borders and remnants from previous scrapbook adhesion to reverse. Accompanied by several related items: the March 1972 National Lampoon issue in which this was published (on page 69); a print of a sketch for the magazine’s famous ‘If You Don't Buy This Magazine, We'll Kill This Dog’ cover, signed and inscribed in black felt tip by Michael Gross; and a handwritten letter of provenance from Gross, in full: “The polaroid you are now holding was taken at the Record Plant in NYC. John & Yoko wanted to do a Foto Funnies for National Lampoon and this was part of the result. I was their personal designer for a year or so and we had a great working relationship. He was everything you’d like to think he was, Yoko…. well, no comment.” A unique, scarce candid photograph published in one of Lennon's favorite magazines.
