John Winston Lennon (October 9 1940 – December 8 1980) was a musician and songwriter, most famous for being one of the founding members of The Beatles.

Career and personal life

In 1957, Lennon met and formed a musical partnership with Sir Paul McCartney.

The pair formed a band together called The Quarry Men.The band later became The Beatles with the addition of George Harrison and Pete Best (who was later replaced by Ringo Starr).

In 1965, all four members of the band were granted M.B.E.s by the Queen for import revenues for their record sales.

Lennon married Cynthia Powell in Auguest 1962 and they had a son together called Julian.

The couple divorced in 1968 following Lennon’s return from a trip to India.

Lennon married Yoko Ono on March 20, 1969 and the pair soon began recording songs together.

The Beatles officially split up in 1970 when Paul McCartney announced he was leaving the band.

Death

John Lennon was shot several times as he entered his and Ono’s apartment building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side in New York at 11pm on the 8th December 1980.

He was rushed to St Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center where he died.

Song lyrics

John Lennon’s handwritten lyrics to “All You Need is Love” sold for $1 million at an auction in London’s Hippodrome nightclub in 2005.

An original copy of Lennon’s handwritten lyrics to “A Day in The Life” sold for $1.2 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York in June, 2010.

Musical instruments

Several of Lennon's musical instruments have been sold at auctions.

In 2000, singer George Michael bought the piano John Lennon used to write “Imagine” at auction for £1.45 million. At the same auction a Hammond C3 organ used by Lennon sold for £40,000.

Memorabilia

John Lennon’s porcelain toilet from his Berkshire home sold for £9,500 at an auction organised by Beatles expert Stephen Bailey in August 2010.

Vintage clothing

Many items of vintage clothing worn by John Lennon have been sold at auction.

In 2005, the white suite that Lennon wore on the cover of Abbey Road sold for $118,000 at a Braswell Galleries auction in Connecticut.

A jacket that John Lennon wore in his 1966 Life magazine photo shoot was sold for $240,000 in December 2010 by Julien’s Auctions.
