Peter Cushing watercolour paintings sell for $1,500
Two watercolour paintings by the Hammer horror actor Peter Cushing have sold for £1,150 ($1,628) at Hanson’s Auctioneers in Derbyshire, UK.
The pair date to the early 1930s, long before Cushing made his screen debut, and display simple English countryside scenes.
In 1939 Cushing appeared in The Main in the Iron Mask. From then on he was a highly in-demand actor – taking on his first major role as Osric in Laurence Olivier’s film version of Hamlet in 1948.
However, he is best known for a string of performances for Hammer – for which he starred as Victor Frankenstein and Van Helsing alongside best friend Christopher Lee.
Despite his compellingly creepy onscreen presence, he explained: "People look at me as if I were some sort of monster, but I can't think why.
“In my macabre pictures, I have either been a monster-maker or a monster-destroyer, but never a monster.
“Actually, I'm a gentle fellow. Never harmed a fly. I love animals, and when I'm in the country I'm a keen bird-watcher…
“I do get terribly tired with the neighbourhood kids telling me 'My mum says she wouldn't want to meet you in a dark alley'."
