Model horses is a collecting niche focusing on the buying or making of model horses, often based on real-life breeds or actual horses.

As with many collectibles niches, the hobby has been enhanced in recent years by online sellers and internet discussion forums.

The origins of the model horse hobby, according to Model Horse Guide, date back to the 1950's when the Breyer Company produced its first horse figurine for the MasterCrafter Clock Company to go on top of a clock.

Breyer kept the molds for the horse and when the Clock Company went broke, Breyer sold just the horse. “Over fifty years later, the model horse hobby is better and more populated than ever," says the Guide.

Types of horses

Model horses are now sold online by many retailers, with stock and models by artists being released each year. These models are regarded as art in some circles, and as memorabilia in others with painted ponies falling into the former category.

Autographed models

In response to requests from our enthusiastic collectors for autographed models, website The Trail of Painted Ponies has created and sells "Official Autographed Editions" figurines.

This meets the demand of serious collectors who have been searching for a way to collect figurines that are hand-signed and hand-numbered by the artists.

Jewelled horses

Aside from painted and autographed horses, models decorated with jewels are also available on the markets.

Values and sales

Prices of model horses vary, normally between two figures ($40 to $50) and up to around $300.

Online sellers

Popular online model horse sellers include MyAuctionBarn (model horse auctions) and, as well as eBay.

Internet discussion forums

Haynet is a popular discussion board for collectors of horse models. Elsewhere, website the Model Horse Gallery has “742 people … [keeping] tabs on its news updates, and information from the model horse collecting community” on its Facebook page.
