Your chance to own the $64,000 watch that made Paul Newman look cool

The Great Escape star's classic 1969 Rolex Cosmograph Daytona watch is among 600 stylish lots

July 18 with see the latest Fellows sale of Vintage and Modern Wrist Watches.

600 lots will hit the auction block, with prices ranging from 200 to more than 40,000, meaning collectors and investors of every level will have the chance to pick up a fine timepiece.

Top of the list is the stunning 2006 Rolex automatic Oyster Perpetual Day-Date watch. Made of platinum, the model features a pave-set face inlaid with internally flawless graded diamonds and a bezel set with twenty four baguette diamonds.

In excellent condition and accompanied by its original box and papers, the watch will sell with an estimated pre-sale price of 40,000 - 50,000.

Next up is a superb 1969 Rolex "Paul Newman" Cosmograph Daytona watch. This classic timepiece has been described as "the vintage sports watch to own", and its rare black and cream dial made it the favourite watch worn by the Hollywood legend Paul Newman.

At a Sotheby's sale in November 2010 a 1966 example of the watch appeared with an estimate of around 43,000 - 58,000, and eventually sold for an impressive 186,000.

The 1969 model appearing at the Fellow's sale is offered with a pre-sale estimate of 30,000 - 40,000, but if past sales and the model's growing popularity with collectors is anything to go by it could quite easily beat all expectations.

The watch market has proven stronger than ever in recent years, with World Record prices being broken on a regular basis. The investment potential of wrist watches is clear for all to see, but as with any market it's best to do your homework first.

We recently spoke to Aurel Bacs, the International Co-Head of Christie's Watch Department, about his tips for finding an investment-grade watch. You can read his advice, along with his inside guide to the market, in our exclusive interview here.

The Fellows sale should offer the perfect opportunity for first-time buyers looking to invest in a watch, along with experienced connoisseurs seeking to add to their collection. And as always, watches do make exceptional gifts - especially if they're stylish enough for Paul Newman.
