Wright brothers poster soars to $35,000 at Swann Auction Galleries

A Wright brothers poster highlighted the New York sale on October 18

A poster celebrating the return of the Wright brothers to their hometown of Dayton, Ohio was the top lot of Swann Auction Galleries' Rare & Important Travel Poster sale in New York on October 18.

The brothers had been travelling the world for a number of years, performing demonstrations and courting military contracts.

Itmade an impressive $35,000 against an estimate of $15,000-20,000 - an increase of 75%. The B+ condition print featured minor tears and abrasions, butwas otherwise in good condition considering that it was produced in 1909.

Adolphe Mouron Cassandre's L'Atlantique (1931) also performed well - making $23,750. The iconic poster, featuring Cassandre's unmistakeable interpretation of the art deco style, was graded B+ for condition.

Hubert Herkomer's Normandie/French Line (1939) - featuring the liner lit up at night with her lights glinting on the water - sold for $22,500, up 12% on its$15,000-20,000 valuation.

Roger Bhroder's Les Sports D'Hiver / A St Pierre De Chartreuse (1930) made an increase of 56% on its $8,000-12,000 valuation when it sold for $18,500.

The lithograph features a depiction of a crowd watching a bobsled tournament, and is graded B+ for condition.

Ze'ev Reban's art nouveau-influenced Tourism in Palestine/ Come and See Erezizrael made $13,750 against a $6,000-9,000 estimate - up 52%.
