Winslet Titanic dress auctions for $330,000 in California

The 'jump dress' Kate Winslet wore in 1997 blockbuster Titanic has beaten its estimate by 10%

An iconic dress worn by Kate Winslet in 1997 film Titanic has auctioned for $330,000 in California, beating its $300,000 high estimate by 10%.

The British actress wore the red "jump dress" in her character Rose's first meeting with Leonardo DiCaprio's Jack, in which he prevents Rose from throwing herself overboard.

The iconic nature of the scene and the huge popularity of the film combined to achieve the strong price.

In contrast, a costume Kate Winslet wore in 1999's less prestigious Holy Smoke sold for just $800 in 2006.

And there was also the beauty of the costume itself.

"Director James Cameron famously insisted that all physical aspects of his production maintain the highest level of historical accuracy possible," said the auction house prior to the sale.

"This meticulous attention to detail wasn't spared on the film's legendary and indulgent costumes."

Also auctioning from the film were the faux emerald and diamond earrings that Winslet wore in the same scene. They sold for $20,000 (not including buyer's premium).

Legolas Rings bow Legolas' bow provided the auction's top lot

The top lot of the December 15-16 sale, however, was provided by the Legolas bow Orlando Bloom used in The Lord of the Rings films. It beat its $120,000 estimateby 210% with a $372,000 realisation - an indication that memorabilia from the Peter Jackson trilogy, and indeed the new Hobbit films, could be a strong investment.
