A slice of cake from the royal wedding of Wills and Kate has sold for 1,917 at PFC Auctions in the UK.

The Fiona Cairns-designed fruit cake, which was wrapped in its original greaseproof paper, came in a 5.5 inch-long presentation tin and accompanying compliments slip from Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.

Kylie Whitehead of PFC Auctions commented: "Here's proof, if it were needed, of the power of the British royal family at auction.

"The cake offered a tantalising glimpse, and taste, of arguably the most celebrated wedding of all time, which made it irresistible to bidders - what a superb start to the Jubilee celebrations".

Accompanying the lot was an original order of service from the ceremony at Westminster Abbey. Its 16 pages included vows, hymns, prayers and a blessing.

The wedding was watched by 2.24bn people around the world.

The May 24 online auction also featured a piece of cake from Charles and Diana's wedding in 1981, which sold for 1,756 - a new world record.
