Spink are holding a rare coin sale in London later this month covering ancient, English and Modern coins, commemorative medals and numismatic books.

Amongst the pieces on offer is a rare five guinea piece dating from 1701, near the end of William of Orange's reign.

The Dutch William and his Queen, Mary came to Britain and deposed his uncle, and Mary's father James II of Great Britain, following invitations from many in the UK alarmed by James's open Catholicism.

The coin has a right-facing laureate bust on the obverse and four shields on the reverse presenting the arms, clockwise from top, of England, Scotland, France, and Ireland, centered on William's personal arms of the House of Orange-Nassau.

The coin, in very fine condition excluding a careful repair to a minor flaw below the bust and an early stage die crack by crown above the Irish shield is estimated at 7,000-8,000.

The sale takes place on March 25. Those unable to attend - or wait - may want to take a look at this rare gold coin portfolio.
